(MADISON) — In response to today’s report that Rebecca Kleefisch and Ron Johnson intend to appear at a Chippewa County GOP Lincoln Day lunch with a conspiracy theorist who believes the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol was “staged”, WisDems spokesperson Joe Oslund issued the following statement:

“By sharing a stage with a right-wing conspiracy theorist who denies the plain reality of the January 6th attack, Ron Johnson and Rebecca Kleefisch are once again caving to extremism in the party they claim to lead. The whole world saw clearly what happened that day: a violent mob incited by the former President of the United States attacked our seat of government in an attempt to overthrow a free and fair election, and kill or capture members of Congress and the Vice President. Whatever excuses Kleefisch and Johnson offer, their actions speak louder than words: by choosing to stand with a dangerous conspiracy theorist, they are sending a clear message that radical, anti-democratic views have a home in today’s GOP.”

“We’ve already seen Rebecca Kleefisch use extreme rhetoric and refuse to condemn gross political attacks from a member of her own staff. And we’ve watched for months as Ron Johnson has descended into his own conspiracy rabbit hole, spouting disinformation and racist rhetoric the whole way down. Today’s disturbing report is further evidence that Republican politicians like Kleefisch and Johnson are willing to do anything to advance their careers, even if that means pandering to extremists at the expense of American democracy.”
