WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today Congressman Bryan Steil (WI-01) joined former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Republican Study Committee (RSC) members to introduce the Maximum Pressure Act. This bill enforces and strengthens sanctions on the Iranian Regime. Two of Steil’s bills, the Stop Evasion of Iran Sanctions Act and the No Sanctions Relief for Terrorists Act, are included in the Maximum Pressure Act.
“Sanctions are an effective tool to hold the Iranian Regime accountable, deter the Regime’s nuclear buildup, and weaken Iran’s leaders who are perpetuating and enabling terrorism around the world. The Biden administration’s strategy to combat Iran is concerning. Today’s action is a step towards Congress reasserting itself to end the Regime’s development of a nuclear weapon and stop its support of terrorism. I am glad to join former Secretary Mike Pompeo, Chairman Jim Banks, and my colleagues to support the needed, comprehensive Maximum Pressure Act,” said Steil.
Steil’s Iran sanctions work in the 117th Congress includes the following:
- Steil introduced H.R. 733, the Stop Evasion of Iran Sanctions Act, which prevents those trying to avoid U.S. sanctions against the Iranian Regime by using a mechanism known as INSTEX.
- Steil introduced H.R. 901, the No Sanctions Relief for Terrorists Act, which prevents the administration from providing sanctions relief to individuals and entities in Iran sanctioned for terrorism unless the President could certify to Congress that Iran was no longer sponsoring terrorism.
- Steil led a group of colleagues to urge the House Foreign Affairs Committee to investigate Iran’s violations of the failed Iran Nuclear deal.
- Steil wrote to U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen asking for information into the United States’ involvement in facilitating a South Korean ransom payment to Iran.
- Following Yellen’s non-answer to Steil, Steil led RSC Chairman Jim Banks and Congressman Greg Steube to urge Secretary of State Antony Blinken to provide answers regarding the $1 billion ransom payment from South Korea to Iran.
- Steil demanded answers from Secretaries Yellen and Blinken about the Biden administration’s strategy to deal with Iranian oil exports to China.
