Congresswoman Gwen Moore Statement on Senate’s Failure to Pass H.R. 1

“After losing the House, Senate, and White House, Republicans across the country have decided that, instead of appealing to voters, they would rather disenfranchise Americans. Since Jan 6th, our democracy has been under attack by Republicans who have introduced nearly 400 bills in 48 states that make it harder to vote, including right here in Wisconsin, where Republican legislators are advancing voter suppression legislation to make it harder for the elderly and those who are disabled to vote.

They would rather continue their Big Lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen and try to rig elections than win them based on ideas and policy. I am disappointed but not surprised by the Senate Republicans who failed to vote to strengthen our democracy.

H.R. 1 would restore the protections in the Voting Rights Act, prevent voters from being purged from the rolls, and secure same-day registration and automatic voter registration for Americans who are eligible. We should be making it easier for every eligible person to participate in our democracy.

The majority of Americans support the provisions in H.R. 1. A recent poll found that more than 80 percent of Americans support measures to improve our election security and restrict the influence of big money in our elections. Voting rights are made partisan by GOP politicians in D.C.

We cannot afford to delay acting any longer to protect the critical right to vote. I will continue to work to do so and hope that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle will too.”
