The Senate passed a bill today that would standardize recount pay for election workers and require Wisconsin Elections Commission approval for recounts held at private facilities.

Under the bill, passed 18-12 along party lines, election workers would be paid the same amount they were paid for “similar work” at the election itself.

SB 268 would also require counties and municipalities to get approval from the WEC to rent private facilities for conducting recounts in state or national office races. The bill prohibits renting such spaces for recounts without WEC approval.

The bill now heads to the Assembly.
