Madison- State Representative Tyler Vorpagel (R-Plymouth) issued the following regarding passage of Assembly Bill 1 as amended:

“Nearly 3 weeks ago, I voted in favor of Assembly Bill 1, which contained 44 provisions and made $100 million available to continue the fight against COVID-19.  The State Senate took out a number of provisions that are important to our constituents. Today, the Assembly came back into session to again pass reasonable common-sense legislation to deal with COVID-19.

“The number one thing I’ve heard from my constituents regarding COVID relief was the requirement to get the vaccine. That’s why under this bill we have once again added the provision that prohibits your employer, the Department of Health Services, and local health officers from requiring you to get the vaccine.  We have many exemptions for other life-saving vaccines that are available and I believe this vaccine should be no different.

“The second is I heard from my constituents was to allow for an “essential visitor” to nursing homes and assisted living facilities so that families can safely visit their loved ones.  Thankfully, this provision stayed in the original bill.

“We continued to support an “all-hands-on-deck” by allowing dentists and pharmacy students to administer the vaccine and providing support to hospitals.  We also gave parents the ability to transfer their children to districts that offer in-person learning while continuing to protect schools and businesses from frivolous lawsuits from certain liabilities.

“While I’m disappointed that we needed to come back and re-pass legislation, I am happy to again come to the Assembly floor to pass common sense legislation to provide COVID relief.”
