MILWAUKEE – Last week Supervisor Priscilla E. Coggs-Jones refereed the Get Vaccinated Basketball Tournament featuring County Executive David Crowley and staff at the Milwaukee County House of Correction. The event encouraged staff to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Supervisor Coggs-Jones released the following statement on the tournament and the importance of getting vaccinated:

“Volunteering to referee at the House of Correction’s Get Vaccinated Basketball Tournament was a golden opportunity. As someone who was recently vaccinated, I took pride and pleasure to participate in this fun way of encouraging vaccinations for House of Correction staff.

“High five to Superintendent Chantell Jewell and Assistant Superintendent Anthony Dodd for organizing this tournament and being creative in boosting vaccinations among their staff. Also, high five to County Executive Crowley for participating. The County Executive’s got game. He was ballin!

“I started refereeing with my father, Wendell R. Jones, who was tired of me borrowing a little money from him from time to time. He brought me into the Midwest Minority Officials Association (MMOA), where I have had the opportunity to break the glass ceiling along with African American women like T Renee Carson and Pam Clarke. The MMOA was founded in Milwaukee in 1987 and is led by President Barney Hall.

“When you enjoy doing something you love you do not mind volunteering, and basketball has always been a part of my life. I played on all the neighborhood courts and basically lived in Milwaukee County’s King Center gym, learning from some of the city’s best coaches Charles Reese and Greg Brown.

“It’s not considered work. It’s not considered volunteering. It’s considered a LIFESTYLE. A lifestyle that I’ve seen my family commit to relentlessly throughout my entire life.”
