Medicaid coverage increases access to cancer screenings, prevention and treatment

for Wisconsin low-income adults and families

Madison, Wis. – May 19, 2021 – Today, Governor Tony Evers called a special session to reopen the conversation around the benefits of BadgerCare (Medicaid) expansion, a measure with strong support from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) that would allow thousands of Wisconsinites to gain access to affordable, comprehensive health care.

In response, Sara Sahli, Wisconsin government relations director for ACS CAN, issued the following statement:

“We thank Governor Tony Evers for calling this special session and reopening the conversation around expanding eligibility for health insurance through BadgerCare. For the estimated 36,520 Wisconsinites who will be diagnosed with cancer this year, access to health care will be an important factor in their survival and quality of life.

“BadgerCare expansion would help provide access to affordable, comprehensive and timely care to countless Wisconsinites — including cancer patients and survivors — who have lost their jobs, had their hours reduced, or otherwise faced serious economic hardship due to the coronavirus and now find themselves uninsured.

“Wisconsin can only benefit from BadgerCare expansion. We encourage our lawmakers to take a stride toward creating a healthier, more equitable Wisconsin, while simultaneously helping our economy.”
