U.S. Rep. Gallagher: Leads effort to curb wasteful government spending

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Jackie Speier (D-CA) yesterday reintroduced the bipartisan Billion Dollar Boondoggle Act, legislation that would increase transparency and accountability in large-scale government projects. The bill, which was introduced in the Senate by Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Gary Peters (D-MI), requires an annual report to taxpayers listing every government-funded project that is $1 billion or more over budget, or that is five or more years behind schedule. The bill passed unanimously out of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee on Wednesday. “In Congress, we can’t be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars if we

Protect Our Care Wisconsin: Protections for people with pre-existing conditions

Eleven years ago, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) became the law of the land and millions of people gained coverage and critical protections as a result. Because of the ACA, insurers in the individual market can no longer drop or deny coverage, or charge people more because of a pre-existing condition. More than 135 million Americans have a pre-existing health condition, such as asthma, diabetes, or cancer.   After four long years of Republican efforts to repeal and sabotage the law, President Biden and Democrats in Congress are now working to build on the strong foundation of the ACA to

Quotes of the Week If they have money in their checking accounts, they’re not looking for a job. So I think the problem is not the suspension of the one-week waiting period. It’s getting more people into the workforce to fill the huge number of jobs that are going unresponsive to employers who need folks. – Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, expressing reservations over again suspending the … Please log in to access subscriber content. Menomonie, Wis. — A powerful weapon, hopefully the knockout punch, has arrived in the yearlong battle against COVID-19: vaccines. Badger Institute Symposium: ‘It’s time to reform state expungement law’

Wisconsin’s expungement law is flawed and unlike any other in the nation. The law, designed to allow for people with low-level, non-violent offenses to essentially have their record sealed, is so restrictive that it makes it difficult for anyone to receive an expungement and makes it nearly impossible for judges to make informed decisions.. Join the Badger Institute on March 24, 2021, at NOON for a virtual discussion with two Wisconsinites who have seen firsthand the need for reform: State Public Defender Kelli Thompson and Shanyeill McCloud, founder of Clean Slate Milwaukee. In a conversation moderated by Badger Institute Policy Analyst Julie Grace, Thompson and McCloud will discuss the
