Today, Thursday July 30, 2020, Voces de la Frontera Action announces our second round of candidate endorsements for the upcoming Wisconsin elections on August 11th. We strongly support these three candidates, representing voters in Milwaukee County and in Green Bay. Here is why we think you should as well:

In Milwaukee County we are excited to announce our endorsement of Jacob Malinowski, representing Greendale, Greenfield, and Franklin for 82nd District State Representative.

Malinowski is young, energetic, and fully committed to defending labor and immigrant rights in Milwaukee County. “For me, positive immigration reform would create a world where folks can join our country without an unnecessary or hateful burden,” he said. “It’s good for everyone when immigration is fair and reasonable: it helps everyone get involved, pay their fair share, and receive the benefits they deserve. We’ve got a long way to go in Wisconsin, but I’m willing to step up to the plate.”

Secondly, in Milwaukee central city we are proud to endorse incumbent LaTonya Johnson for 6th District State Senator. Johnson is a strong fighter for working families and the economic and social justice that they deserve. She has joined Voces members in past events and is an outspoken and principled advocate for working people and the oppressed.

“Unions are in my blood and the labor movement is the root of my progressive values,” she said. “I will push for Milwaukee’s working families to receive their fair share of state revenue, have access to high-quality public schools, and earn a living wage in a workplace where labor has a seat at the table to collectively bargain over pay, benefits, and working conditions. Working families have a seat at every table I sit at, which is why I view being an effective legislator as so important.”

Finally, in Green Bay, we are excited to endorse Kristina Shelton for 90th District State Representative. Shelton’s Assembly District is part of the must-win Senate District 30 which has about 10% Latinx population. We will work hard to make sure we deliver this key area by mobilizing Latinx, multiracial youth, and pro-immigrant rural supporters. We are especially proud to back Shelton because her commitment to providing adequate COVID-19 protections for workers in Green Bay aligns with our Voces de la Frontera Essential Workers Rights Campaign in the meatpacking industry and other industries.

“Green Bay, Wisconsin, has been a hotspot for COVID, in large part because of the anti-worker policies of the packing plants here,” she said. “We can do better, and we must do better. We need worker protections and public health measures to prevent the spread of the virus, and to ensure everyone in Wisconsin has access to unemployment benefits if necessary, healthcare, and, going forward, good jobs in which workers are protected.” If elected, Shelton will fight for the protections that Green Bay essential workers need and deserve.

Voces de la Frontera Action is proud to endorse these three candidates for the upcoming August 11 elections in Wisconsin, in addition to the four women we endorsed last week. We firmly believe that our endorsed candidates will champion immigrant and labor rights if elected, based on their proven commitment to our communities.

Electing these leaders is especially important in this historic moment in our country, amid a global pandemic that is disproportionately affecting people of color and immigrants and as we mobilize the vote to drive out white supremacists from the White House come November.
