La Crosse, WI— Today, Rep. Ron Kind sent a letter to the Department of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin urging him to ensure local governments in Wisconsin are eligible to receive the direct funding that was provided in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which was passed by Congress last month. The CARES Act included $150 billion in funding for state and local governments, but unfortunately, due to Treasury’s interpretation of the legislative language, only local governments with a population of over 500,000 will be eligible for direct funding. This would make all local governments in Wisconsin except Milwaukee ineligible for funding.

“Local governments throughout Wisconsin are facing unprecedented declines in revenue while trying to deal with the health and economic effects of COVID-19 in their communities. We must ensure that all local governments, regardless of size, are able to access the funding that Congress provided in the recent funding package,” said Rep. Ron Kind. “I urge Treasury to quickly issue guidance that ensures all local governments in Wisconsin receive their fair share of the funding.”
