Former Gov. Tommy Thompson is dropping out as an at-large delegate to the Republican National Convention now that he’s interim president of the UW System.

Thompson, who was appointed interim president June 19, was on the list of 52 delegates and 49 alternates that the state GOP released to WisPolitics.com on Thursday. UW later contacted WisPolitics.com to say Thompson would no longer serve as a delegate.

A party spokeswoman said he would likely be replaced by one of the at-large alternates.

“Since agreeing to serve as President of the UW System, Tommy has been removing himself from prior obligations so he can best commit to his new position,” said UW spokesman Mark Pitsch. “This includes his withdrawal as a delegate at the upcoming Republican convention.”
