Madison- Senators Bob Wirch (D-Somers) issued the following statement following the news that IKEA’s US Community Foundation is donating $947,000 in grants to address workforce needs in southeastern Wisconsin, with a focus on improving racial equality in employment:

“I want to thank IKEA for being a good corporate citizen and addressing a timely need.  The Covid-19 pandemic has made more obvious than ever the inequities that exist in our state.  These grants will fund skills training and education to begin reducing racial disparities in the workplace.”

The grants will be administered by the state Department of Workforce Development through its Workforce Equity Grant program.  The grants will reimburse southeastern Wisconsin employers for the costs to develop and implement training programs and workplace supports for underserved populations.  Applications for the grant program are due by 3 pm on Monday, January 18, 2021 and must be submitted by email to [email protected].  More information can be found at
