MADISON – Senator Jeff Smith (D-Brunswick) issued the following statement regarding Governor Tony Evers’ State of the State Address:

“During Governor Evers’ first year in office, he traveled to all of Wisconsin’s 72 counties, meeting community members and listening to their stories. It’s clear these conversations were the key to success in his first year and what has shaped the priorities for the year ahead to move Wisconsin forward.

“I’m proud of the Governor’s continued commitment to support our farmers by calling a special session to advance strategic initiatives and invest in our rural communities to strengthen Wisconsin’s longstanding agricultural legacy.

“I commend Governor Evers’ determination to expand access to educational opportunity and support students of all ages by announcing the creation of a Task Force on Student Debt.

“Plans to move Wisconsin forward cannot be accomplished until Wisconsin has fair maps to ensure the will of the people is heard. I applaud Governor Evers on his announcement to create a nonpartisan redistricting commission to guarantee voter’s voices count.

“Governor Evers is ready to work and so am I. As we start this new year and new decade, I look forward to the opportunity for Republicans to join Democrats, at last, and develop meaningful solutions that matter most to Wisconsinites.”
