Madison, WI – Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) made the following statement on agriculture and the COVID-19 pandemic:

“I have heard from several farmers in my district who are concerned about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on milk hauling, supply chains and food processors.  As in any widescale crisis, there are rumors floating around the industry.

I reached out to DATCP Secretary Randy Romanski to discuss these concerns.

It important for everyone to know that the Governor’s Executive Order to prohibit mass gatherings of 50 people or more does NOT apply to manufacturing, processing, distribution and production facilities.

In addition, DATCP is gathering work groups of agricultural industry associations to address ongoing concerns and challenges. They will be meeting via teleconference this week and DATCP will be maintaining an online presence to provide updates on these issues, especially workforce challenges. We want to make sure we have the workers needed to keep our food supply chain in action.

The bottom-line is that food supply security is one of the top priorities for our state at this time and we are doing all we can to protect, encourage and support farmers, processors, transportation and production.”
