MADISON – Today, Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) showed his support for six bills that work to combat addiction and substance abuse in Wisconsin. The bills come as part of a larger legislative initiative, led by Rep. John Nygren (R-Marinette), called the Heroin, Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Agenda.

Assembly Majority Leader Steineke released the following statement upon the bills’ passage:

“What we’ve learned over the years of Rep. Nygren leading the fight on this life-or-death issue is that, unfortunately, opioid addiction does not discriminate – it’s a disease that families from big cities and small towns alike endure. Since 2013, we have passed 30 bipartisan bills as part of the HOPE Agenda, helping communities across Wisconsin face this epidemic.

“With today’s passage, I am proud to see us continue to build on the progress we’ve already made in this area. While there is always more work to be done, I am confident that these bills will continue marking Wisconsin as a national leader in combatting addiction and substance abuse.

“I would like to thank Rep. Nygren for his continued dedication to this issue. His leadership and steadfastness in providing our body with bills that will make important changes to help combat heroin and opioid addiction are no doubt a reason that in 2018, we saw a 10% decrease in opioid-related deaths. Under Rep. Nygren’s leadership, I look forward to continuing to address addiction and substance abuse through the HOPE Agenda.”
