MADISON– Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) released the following statement announcing an endorsement for her candidacy for Wisconsin’s 16th Senate District:

“I am honored to announce an endorsement from WEAC Member and Vice President of Madison Teachers Inc. (MTI) Michael Jones,” said Sargent. “Michael is a dedicated teacher who has fought ardently for public education and supporting our teachers, students, and community.”

Michael Jones is the Dean of Students at West High School while also working in after school & family programming. Previously, he was a proud Special Education teacher at Black Hawk Middle School. He is currently the Vice-President of MTI where he is the founding co-chair of MTI’s Diversity and Equity Committee. Further, he is a member of the Black Educators Network,  part of the founding of Middleton High School’s Black Student Union, and is one of the developers of Madison’s “Black Lives Matter Week of Action in Schools” this school year.

“I am proud to support Melissa Sargent because as a Madison teacher and homeowner, I have been impressed with Melissa’s resolve to fight for the many marginalized voices in our community, ” said Jones. “Melissa has spoken up for our community’s values of inclusivity and uplifting the views of those who’ve been historically and systematically shut out. When she speaks, she speaks for our children and our families, not because they’re the ones who’ve given her the most money, but because it’s the right thing to do to make our community a better place for everyone. Senate District 16 would be lucky to have Melissa Sargent as our State Senator!” continued Jones.

“I’m very grateful to be receiving support from Michael,” said Sargent. “He has been an incredible advocate for public education, and is a leader for initiatives that lift up marginalized voices and fight for equity and inclusion. I am proud to have Michael’s endorsement for my candidacy for State Senate.”
