Our community continues to face extraordinary times. Between the ongoing pandemic and steady increases in shots fired, the health and wellbeing of all Madison residents are constantly front of my mind, especially today.

Today the City of Madison mourns the passing of Anisa Scott, a life taken too soon by senseless gun violence. We must work together to end gun violence in our city, our state, and our nation.

I spoke with Anisa’s family today to offer my deepest condolences for their loss. I know all our thoughts go out to her family and her many friends.

The Madison Police Department Violent Crime unit is dedicating significant resources to finding the persons responsible for this. The City is investing in violence prevention and we will do more. We need the Federal Government to pass common sense gun control to get these handguns off the streets. We need the federal and state governments to provide the economic supports families need to get through this pandemic, which is staggering our economy and contributing to this rash of violence.

Today, I ask you to mourn, but also to come together as a community to help prevent future acts of gun violence.
