Weston Trustee Yee Leng Xiong was appointed to the League of Wisconsin Municipalities Board of Directors bringing his experience representing his constituents as a Weston Trustee, Marathon County Board Supervisor and D.C. Everest School Board member to the statewide Board. The League serves Wisconsin’s cities and villages, providing advocacy, training and legal services.
“I am excited to have been appointed to the League of Wisconsin Municipalities Board. I am hoping that I will be able to share my experience in my current elected roles to help advocate for municipalities across the State of Wisconsin,” said Xiong. “We need to look at developing alternative sources of funding to be able to help our struggling municipalities across the State of Wisconsin.”
Xiong will serve a three-year term on the 16-member League Board joining his peers from cities and villages across Wisconsin. He joins the League’s governing body at a crucial time in the League’s 121-year history as the organization begins to focus on providing Wisconsin’s municipalities with more ability to set priorities at the local level.
Yee Leng Xiong was born in Wausau, Wisconsin on May 20, 1994. In 2000, he moved to Weston, WI where he is currently residing today.
After graduation, he led a group of Hmong youths and revived the youth organization known as H.M.O.N.G. (Help Making Our Next Generation). Eventually, he became involved with the Wausau Area Hmong Mutual Association (WAHMA) now known as the Hmong American Center, Inc., serving on the Hmong New Year Committee, Hmong Heritage Month Committee, and eventually a member of the Hmong American Center Board of Directors. He also served as a member of the Hmong-Lao Veterans Memorial Project. Today, he is working at the Hmong American Center, Inc. as the Executive Director, and the chairperson of the Hmong Wausau Festival, the largest Hmong festival in Central Wisconsin.
Other than his involvement in the Hmong community, he has also been involved with other organizations such as the Wisconsin Institution of Public Policies and Services (W.I.P.P.S). In 2013, he was selected as the W.I.P.P.S. Fellow of 2013. Currently, he also serves on the CoVantage Credit Union Community Development Financial Institution advisory board and the Central Wisconsin Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Board of Directors.
In 2014, Yee Leng was elected to the DC Everest School Board, at the age of 19 as the first elected Hmong official in the DC Everest District where he was appointed as the delegate to the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, an organization that advocates for all the school districts throughout the state of Wisconsin, and in 2018 Yee Leng was elected as the Board Clerk.
In 2016, Yee Leng was elected by the citizens of District 19 in Marathon County as their County Board Supervisor. He currently serves as a member of the Human Resource, Finance, and Property Standing Committee, a member of the Social Services Board, a member of the McDEVCO Board, and the chair of the Diversity Affairs Commission.
In 2018, Yee Leng was elected by the citizens of the Village of Weston as a Village Trustee. He is the first Trustee of Hmong descent to serve the Village. He is the chair of the Village of Weston’s Parks and Recreation Committee.
In 2019, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers appointed Yee Leng to the Governor’s Financial Literacy Council, and in October of 2019, Yee Leng was appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Wisconsin State Legislature to serve on the State of Wisconsin Council on Affirmative Action.
Most recently in January of 2020, Yee Leng Xiong was elected as Board President of the Wisconsin United Coalition of Mutual Assistance Associations.
