The League of Wisconsin Municipalities applauds the Senate and the Assembly for taking steps recently to pass SB 95, SB 96, and SB 97, the three bills recommended by the Legislative Council Study Committee on Property Tax Assessment Practices (AKA the Dark Store Study Committee). The Senate passed SB 96 in January and will hopefully take up SB 95 and SB 97 yet this month. Rep. Rohrkaste (R-Neenah) has introduced companion bills in the Assembly where the bills will hopefully receive a hearing soon.

These three bills will make it easier for municipalities to more accurately assess commercial properties and more easily defend those assessments against dark store challenges brought by certain retail chains. The bills will help municipalities continue a sweep of recent circuit court decisions upholding property assessments against dark store challenges.
