MADISON, Wis. – Elected official, environmental nonprofit leader, and small business owner John Imes today applauded House Democrats for passing the Justice in Policing Act of 2020, model legislation that Wisconsin can apply to take bold action that holds law enforcement accountable for misconduct, prohibits racial profiling, reforms police training, weakens qualified immunity protection, and requires officers to wear and properly operate body cameras – all to put us on the path to greater transparency, accountability and justice for all.

“A primary goal of our campaign is to enact high-road progressive policies that create a more just, equitable, sustainable, and inclusive Main Street economy that works for all,” said Imes. “We cannot achieve that goal amid the ongoing problems of unequal justice and police misconduct that is often racially motivated.”

To Save Our Main Streets, Imes stated we must also enact legislation to support the hardest-hit small businesses and their employees who continue to struggle with the impacts of COVID-19 and the destructive actions of a few who engaged in violence that devastated small businesses in our community, many owned by immigrants and people of color.

“As State Senator, I will work to enact legislation that stands up for local businesses and workers, rebuilds our Main Streets, and makes the state a model for high-road practices that preserve jobs, reduce social/economic disparities and make an economic recovery that works for all.”

Imes will share his ideas tonight at the Senate District 26 Student Candidate Forum sponsored by the College Democrats of UW Madison, Democratic Party of Dane County, and the Young Progressives.
