Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, declared victory Tuesday night in the GOP primary for the 5th CD, rolling to a win over businessman Cliff DeTemple.

The win makes Fitzgerald the heavy favorite to succeed longtime U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Menomonee Falls, in the southeastern Wisconsin seat.

With 84 percent of the vote in, Fitzgerald was at 77.3 percent to 22.7 percent for DeTemple.

“I entered this race because I wanted to bring the common-sense, conservative reforms that we’ve championed here in Wisconsin to Washington,” Fitzgerald said. “The events of recent months have further cemented the idea that we need experienced, proven conservative leaders in Congress to stand with our Commander in Chief and protect our democracy.”
