MILWAUKEE, WI June 3, 2020 — After gathering more than 1000 ballot signatures during a stay-at-home order — 800 more than needed to be on the ballot — the Andraca campaign announced today that there are no other candidates running against incumbent Jim Ott (R-Mequon) in the fall election.
“We are very pleased that we can focus 100 percent of our time and effort on winning on November 3rd,” said challenger Deb Andraca. “I hear from voters in every part of the 23rd district that they are tired of the political games in Madison, that they want a representative who shows up and works hard on their behalf, and who votes in the best interest of the people they represent, not the party.”
The Andraca campaign launched back in November and quickly raised more money by the end of the year than any other challenger in the state. Overcoming obstacles has become a hallmark of the campaign: first there was a blizzard the day of the kickoff in February, then COVID-19 prevented supporters from going door-to-door collecting signatures. In both instances voters showed their support in record numbers.
“It takes a lot of work to win in a gerrymandered district,” said Andraca, “but overwhelmingly voters are telling me they want change in Madison, starting with our district.” The 23rd assembly district includes the Milwaukee suburbs of Whitefish Bay, Fox Point, Bayside, Eastern Mequon, Thiensville and Grafton.
