FITCHBURG, WI – The 2019 construction season is underway and the final construction contract has been issued for the multi-year Verona Road (US 18/151) Project in Fitchburg. While there will be no noticeable difference to the traveling public, the contractor has received the start notice for the final contract as part of the major Verona Road Project.
This final phase and contract will include:
- Reconstruction and expansion of Verona Road from County PD/McKee Road to Raymond Road;
- Construction of the two Verona Road bridges over County PD; and
- Reconstruction and expansion of County PD from Fitchrona Road to Commerce Park Drive.
Two lanes remain open to traffic in each direction on Verona Road. Nighttime single lane closures may occur on Verona Road and County PD throughout the construction season. Access continues to remain open to area businesses and neighborhoods. The public is encouraged to continue to patronize the local businesses in the project area.
Motorists are encouraged to be alert and drive with caution in all work zones, and eliminate distractions when behind the wheel.
This $33.5 million phase of construction is scheduled to be completed in fall 2020. The contractor for this project is Integrity Grading and Excavating, Inc., based out of Schofield, WI.
Construction work related to the Verona Road Project began in 2013 with the Seminole Highway bridge reconstruction; area intersection improvements; and resurfacing Verona Road for future traffic staging. In early 2014, Verona Road traffic was shifted multiple times, between Raymond Road and the Beltline, as crews constructed the new six-lane highway over a roundabout to handle frontage road traffic below. Construction on this section of Verona Road was completed in June 2015. In fall 2014, crews began reconstructing and expanding the Beltline, between Seminole Highway and Whitney Way, to three lanes in each direction; and reconfiguring the Beltline and Verona Road interchange. New concrete lanes for the eastbound Beltline were constructed first in 2015 and handled all Beltline traffic in this area as crews expanded the westbound side in 2016. Stage 1 of the project was completed in fall 2016.
Construction for Stage 2 of the project shifted south in Fitchburg starting in fall 2016. Over the past two and a half years, work has occurred on area roadways at the Williamsburg Way and Anton Drive intersection; Fitchrona Road extension; East Frontage Road realignment and construction of the future interchange ramps at County PD and Williamsburg Way. The entire Verona Road Project is currently scheduled to be completed in fall 2020.
