MADISON — Robin Vos and Scott Fitzgerald, who teamed up with former governor Scott Walker to dole out $4.5 billion of taxpayer money to a foreign corporation with a bad track record, have gone on the defensive after yet another announcement from Foxconn that the corporation would be scaling back its plan to build in Wisconsin. Foxconn, which has virtually no tax liability thanks to a 2013 Republican bill, has made multiple backtracks on its original promise, even failing to follow through on its 2018 job creation goal.

“This deal was reckless from the beginning,” said Martha Laning, chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. “Despite multiple red flags throughout the negotiation process, Wisconsin Republicans put taxpayers on the line for $4.5 billion and rewrote the entire rule book for an election-year talking point. They charged forward with this deal with themselves and their political futures in mind, not the people of Wisconsin.

“Vos and Fitzgerald can’t just wash their hands of this tremendous disappointment. They chose to ignore the obvious risk and rush this deal through. They alone are responsible for Foxconn’s failures.

“Governor Evers has consistently stated that he wants to work with Foxconn to ensure they are held accountable to their promises. Moving forward, we hope that the communities and taxpayers who have already invested millions in this project will be protected.”
