Help spread the word to child advocacy in WI by wearing blue!
(Green Bay, WI) The Wisconsin CASA Association will hold its second annual “I am for the Child Day” on Wednesday, April 17, and needs Wisconsinites help to spread of word for to encourage more people to become child advocates. Last year, thousands of individuals, schools and community organizations united in wearing blue for the day to call attention to the need for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs), who are a voice for children in the child welfare system.
“April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and, as champions of abused and neglected children, we want to educate the public about what CASA is, does, and how we help children across the state; benefitting the children as well as local communities,” said Wisconsin CASA State Director Sue Schwartz. “Last year’s day kicked off a year of growth in our organization and helped lay the groundwork for the establishment of more local CASA programs and volunteers in Wisconsin.”
As blue is the representing color for child abuse prevention, individuals across the state are encouraged to wear blue on April 17 and post a photo on social media using the hashtag: #CASAwearsBlueDayWI. In 2018, CASA Advocates in Wisconsin served roughly 975 children, however there were nearly 7,000 children in need of an Advocate. “The sad fact is, we have many more children who need an Advocate than we have volunteers,” added Schwartz. “That’s why this day is so important. If we raise awareness, we know more people will step forward to become Advocates.”
