Bipartisan legislation authored by Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) that helps individuals with previous convictions find a better chance of employment passed the Senate Tuesday as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The legislation now awaits President Trump’s signature.

“Getting people back to work improves the safety of our communities, strengthens families, and reduces government dependence – goals that all Americans share,” said Sen. Johnson. “If someone getting out of prison wants to work and be a productive member of society, we should do everything possible to facilitate that. Today’s passage of the Fair Chance Act is an important step in that direction.”

In addition, the Justice Action Network applauded the work of Senator Johnson and others for their work – “Today is a significant step forward for millions of Americans struggling with the stigma of a criminal record,” said Justice Action Network Executive Director Holly Harris. “Thanks to bipartisan efforts of Sen. Ron Johnson, Sen. Cory Booker, Rep. Doug Collins, and the late Chairman Elijah Cummings, one more barrier to jobs is torn down, making our economy stronger and our communities safer.”
