WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congressman Mike Gallagher voted against H.R. 1, a costly election reform bill that would expand the federal government’s role in elections and restrict free speech. After the vote, Rep. Gallagher released the following statement:
“Congress needs reform, but instead of tackling the real problems posed by bad congressional process, H.R. 1 goes too far in trying to control what people say and how they vote,” said Rep. Gallagher. “Rather than drain the swamp, this partisan bill fills it with billions of taxpayer dollars to be spent on attack ads and overpriced political consultants.”
Background: Rep. Gallagher is a leading voice on Congressional reform. Since taking office, he has introduced legislation to: impose Congressional term limits; extend a lobbying ban on high-level government officials; prevent members of Congress and government officials from registering as foreign lobbyists; remove special pensions for members of Congress; and bar Congress from going into recess until members pass a budget.
