MADISON –Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) announced the launch of a new Legislative Fellowship Program aimed at promoting career opportunities and learning experiences for students of historically under-represented communities including racial/ethnic minorities, women, people with disabilities, and veterans.
“For too long, communities that make up sizeable portions of our state’s population have been under-represented in the halls of the State Capitol. That’s why I am thrilled to announce our Legislative Fellowship Program to create new opportunities for students who aspire to gain experience and explore a career path in state government,” said Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling. “There is immense talent in communities of all types in every corner of our state and we have a duty to ensure that opportunities to work in state government are extended to all Wisconsinites – not just a privileged few.”
The Legislative Fellowship Program is accepting applications starting today, Tuesday, March 26th. Applications are due by Friday, April 12th.
A Legislative Fellow in Senator Shilling’s office will have many exciting projects relating to diverse policy issues and regional concerns. Responsibilities in this role will include various tasks such as constituent casework, committee tracking, press monitoring, and legislative research.
Fellows will begin work on May 28th and end on August 30th depending on their availability and are expected to work 20-40 hours a week based on their availability. Each position will earn $12 -$15 an hour.
Qualified applicants will possess a desire to be engaged in the political process, good interpersonal communications skills, an ability to work well in a team setting, high level organizational and time management skills. Applicants are also required to attend or be enrolled at a two- or four-year college/university or a vocational/technical school program. Prior political or office experience is not required.
