MADISON – Senator Jeff Smith (D-Brunswick) issued the following statement regarding Governor Tony Evers’ first State of the State Address:

“Governor Evers’ message of unity is a far cry from the divide and conquer politics that have become too common in politics today. I’m hopeful the Governor’s invitation to work together will be heard by Republican leaders in the Legislature.

“The Governor’s call for allowing students to refinance student loan debt, eliminating corporate tax loopholes, and raising the minimum wage are long overdue. Growing our middle class and helping the less fortunate in our society are proven ways to usher in a thriving economy.

“I was especially excited to hear the Governor’s goal to renew our commitment to two-thirds funding for public schools. I stand with the Governor’s call for Wisconsin to join the thirty-seven other states that have expanded Medicaid funding to cover our most vulnerable citizens.”

“I strongly support Governor Tony Evers’ new vision for our state. I look forward to working with my Democratic and Republican colleagues in the State Senate to make our Governor’s goals a reality.”
