MADISON, WI – Today, in both the Senate and Assembly, Republicans held hearings on bills aimed at restricting women’s access to comprehensive reproductive care. Last November, voters made it clear that they are ready for change. Yet, the GOP continues to play the same political game of attacking health care at every turn, and introducing tired policies that interfere with the patient-provider relationship.  That is why Governor Evers’ “Healthy Women, Healthy Babies” initiatives are so important to moving Wisconsin forward.

In his state budget, Governor Evers introduced proposals to increase access to preventive care, such as cancer screenings, health exams, and STI testing, supporting healthier pregnancies and births, and addressing racial disparities in maternal and child health. Wisconsin cannot thrive without healthy women and babies, and that is why we need a budget that connects the dots to improve birth outcomes and increase access to women’s health care services.

“Republicans are sending a strong message to the people of our state that access to comprehensive health care is less important than the political points they’re trying to score,” said Senator Erpenbach. “Whether they are refusing to bring home 1.6 billion dollars by expanding Medicaid, or denying women the ability to make their own health decisions, they are continuing to show Wisconsinites that they do not have their best interests in mind.  It is time that we reverse this trend and commit to protecting everyone in our state by working towards expanding access to affordable health care.”
