(MADISON) –   State Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) today issued a statement in light of the news that Governor Tony Evers has issued Executive Order No. 29 declaring that a rainbow flag will be raised over the Wisconsin State Capitol building and other state buildings for the first time in history.

“Thank you Governor Evers,” said Carpenter, the only openly gay State Senator currently serving in the State Legislature. “This is a very welcoming sign to many of us and it signifies a new direction for Wisconsin. We are showing that we are a welcoming and inclusive state and that means a great deal.”

Senator Carpenter, who will be at the opening ceremonies of the PrideFest activities in Milwaukee, noted that it has been a long ordeal for many people to gain acceptance and respect after identifying as a member of the LGBTQ community.

“With this very simple, basic step of raising the rainbow flag over the Capitol and other state government buildings, Governor Evers has demonstrated that he recognizes and accepts all of us for the people we are. It demonstrates that Wisconsin is welcoming. That is a very big deal.”

“Thank you Governor Evers.”
