Republicans try to connect the dots like Governor Evers, but run out of ink.
MADISON— Today the budget that was debated in the State Assembly was not The People’s Budget Governor Evers delivered to the Joint Finance Committee, which he crafted by traveling around the state and listening to people. Rather, Republican representatives once again chose politics over the people by rejecting Medicaid expansion, failing to adequately fund our public education system, and refusing to propose a long-term solution to our transportation system, marred by some of the worst roads in the nation.
In response, Democratic Joint Finance Committee members State Rep. Evan Goyke (D-Milwaukee) and State Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) released the following statement:
“A state budget reflects the will of the people and is a moral document. Governor Evers’ budget makes vital investments in every community across the State,” said Rep. Goyke.
“Whether it be the need for Medicaid expansion, an increase in special education funding, or transportation investment, among others – the people of Wisconsin support Governor Evers’ budget and its passage. My legislative Republican colleagues tried to follow the lead of Governor Evers but fell short and missed the opportunities to address the long term needs of our great State.”
“Once again, my Republican colleagues protected $1.4 billion in tax giveaways to big corporations and the wealthiest elite instead of investing in the priorities of the people,” stated Rep. Taylor. “After ushering in the biggest cuts to our public education system in history, Republicans refused to adequately invest in public education at every level, from early education to the UW System. Republicans failed to save millions of state dollars and attract billions in federal funds through Medicaid expansion, and make historic investments in health care for all Wisconsinites.”
“Though Governor Evers’ budget provided a long-term sustainable funding solution for our transportation system, Republicans instead made another large GPR transfer that we could have invested in our people and in our communities. Finally, Republicans failed to address the crisis of contaminated drinking water in wells polluted with nitrates, arsenic and bacteria, leaving their own constituents to drink polluted water. They turned their backs on the people of our state yet again.”
