MADISON – Today, Governor Tony Evers vetoed Assembly Bills 179, 180, 182, and 183, legislation that would have restricted access to reproductive health care for Wisconsinites and punished doctors for approriately caring for their patients.
Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) issued the following statement:
“I was proud to stand with Governor Evers today as he vetoed these misguided and dangerous bills. As states like Alabama and Georgia pass laws banning abortion, I am even more grateful that the people of this state rose up last November and elected a Governor who puts women and their health and rights first. It is apparent that Speaker Vos and other Republicans in the legislature want to ban abortion in every instance and believe that they, rather than women and their families, should make these personal, private decisions.
If the proponents of these bills were truly concerned about the lives and health of women and babies, they would have expanded Medicaid and supported Governor Evers’ “Healthy Women, Healthy Babies” initiative. Instead, they are trying once again to divide and distract from Governor Evers’ popular budget, which they are on the verge of rejecting.
Protecting and enhancing women’s rights has always been and will continue to be a priority for me—and it is clear that Governor Evers shares that priority.”
