MADISON – Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) released the below statement following days of political pageantry by Governor Evers and his administration in regards to combatting homelessness:

While I certainly share in the governor’s frustrations that the package of bills to address homelessness have not passed the Senate, this week’s actions by the administration are shortsighted and will likely have the effect of hardening the positions of the few senators that have questions about the bills.

I am as invested in seeing the bills passed as anyone in the legislature. My office has been working behind-the-scenes to answer any and all questions and have been willing to make changes if needed to address those who have concerns.

If this is solely about politics and scoring political points then the governor and his administration are following the right playbook. If it’s about getting something done to help those in desperate situations then I would ask the governor to follow our lead.

There is still time in this legislative session to get this done. I remain hopeful that the few holdouts on these bills will see the light.
