MILWAUKEE, WI – Today, Governor Tony Evers signed an executive order calling for a legislative Special Session on Common Sense Gun Safety Reform in Wisconsin, scheduled for November 7th, to address gun violence via legislation supporting universal background checks for gun purchases and extreme risk protection orders (ERPO).

Rep. Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) issued the following statement in support:

“Universal background checks and extreme risk protection orders are critical, common-sense tools that allow local law enforcement to reduce gun violence and trafficking in our communities, while protecting law-abiding gun owners,” Neubauer said. “We cannot continue to sit back and do nothing. As lawmakers, we have an obligation to do everything possible to make sure our community members feel safe, whether they are at school, at work, or out and about in our community.”

“These bills are a moderate, common-sense approach to reduce the risk of gun violence in Wisconsin,” Neubauer continued. “While Wisconsin Republicans have refused to take action on these bills, the Governor is calling the legislature into a Special Session to take action. This shouldn’t be a partisan issue — we’ve seen bipartisan gun safety legislation happen in the past at the state level and at the federal level, and broad support for both universal background checks and ERPOs in Wisconsin — and I’m hoping that my colleagues across the aisle will join us in supporting these common-sense tools to reduce gun violence in Wisconsin.”
