MADISON — On Thursday, the Supreme Court of the United States released its final decisions from the October 2018 term, including a decision addressing the question of partisan gerrymandering in Rucho v. Common Cause. Rep. Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) released the following statement in response:
“Gerrymandering disrupts and dishonors our democracy. It allows politicians to choose their people, instead of people choosing their politicians. It is fundamentally ‘incompatible with democratic principles,’ as the majority conceded. That fundamental incompatibility should make partisan gerrymandering an unacceptable practice in Wisconsin and throughout our country.
“While the federal courts can no longer intervene in partisan gerrymandering, the fight is not over. As legislators, we have a responsibility to end this undemocratic practice. Last month, I joined my Democratic colleagues in cosponsoring 2019 Assembly Bill 303/2019 Senate Bill 288, which would create a non-partisan redistricting process for Wisconsin. It’s time for all of us to step up and act to defend our democracy, regardless of party or partisan affiliation.”
