Madison, WI—Today, Representative Cody Horlacher (R-Mukwonago) and Senator André Jacque (R- De Pere) released two bills focused on protecting Wisconsin’s victims. These bills join a variety of measures that Rep. Horlacher has worked on throughout his tenure in the legislature, focusing on helping Wisconsinites who have been victims of crime.

The first bill (LRB-0170/LRB-1391) focuses on crime victim impact statements. We need to ensure that victims are able to share their stories without fear of retribution. This legislation requires that a disclosed statement be kept confidential and returned to the court at the conclusion of representation.

The second bill (LRB-0171/LRB-1392) focuses on crime victim restitution. This legislation has been drafted in partnership with the Wisconsin Victims Rights Evidence-Based Decision Making Workgroup. This bill improves and refines a number of components in the restitution collection process and prioritizes the collection of restitution for victims of crime.

Rep. Horlacher is pleased to advance these additional protections for victims after the success of creating a VOCA Restraining Order Clinic this past fall. This clinic will provide UW Law School students an opportunity to get hands on experience working to provide families with restraining order services.

“I am passionate about helping victims of crime get the justice they deserve. We need to support our friends and neighbors who have been victimized and work together to promote Wisconsin ideals we can all support,” said Rep. Horlacher.
