MADISON – Today, Representative Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton) joins women and allies from around the world in recognizing International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. The theme for the 2019 International Women’s Day is #BalanceforBetter.

“Each year on March 8th, we recognize International Women’s Day. There is so much to celebrate with the gains women have made across every part of our society,” Rep. Hesselbein stated. “But there is more work to be done. Even after a historic election last year when more women were elected to Congress than ever before, more progress needs to be made to achieve parity. We know that when women are fully represented our democracy will benefit. I am here to continue to work towards a brighter future for all women and girls.”

After the 2018 elections, the Wisconsin Assembly Democratic Caucus achieved gender parity. Rep. Hesselbein was one of 18 Democratic women elected to the Assembly last year. However, women make up less than a quarter of the Wisconsin State Legislature as a whole.

“We are living in an exciting time in history. More women are stepping up, getting involved, running for office, and winning. People want balance in their government and more women have decided to claim their seat at the table. International Women’s Day is important because when women succeed everyone does better. So let’s remember the sacrifices those who came before us made and celebrate how far we have come,” Rep. Hesselbein concluded.
