MILWAUKEE, WI – According to a new report from Families USA, 9,531 veterans in Wisconsin would lose their health care coverage if the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is overturned in the current Texas v. United States lawsuit.
Nationally, 689,000 veterans would become uninsured by 2026 – that’s more military veterans who would lose health coverage than the total number of military personnel currently serving in the U.S. Army and Marine Corps combined. The VA would likely be unable to handle the massive spike in demand if that many veterans lose coverage through the ACA.
The Texas v. United States lawsuit was brought by a group of Republican state officials to challenge the constitutionality of the ACA. It is currently in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. If the suit prevails, the entire ACA would be repealed, throwing millions of Americans off their insurance, gutting protections for pre-existing conditions, and creating chaos in our healthcare system.
According to the report, the ACA cut the number of uninsured veterans by more than one-third. Reversing those gains would be catastrophic for the health of those who risked their lives to serve our nation.
“We owe a massive debt to America’s veterans, who put their lives on the line to defend this country,” the report reads. “Many still suffer from the wounds of war. It would be a cruel and profound disservice for the federal courts to repay these veterans’ boundless self-sacrifice by callously withdrawing the health care coverage so many of them need to thrive and even survive.”
