Madison, WI — Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald released the following statement on Wednesday regarding the budget:
“The budget that passed the Finance Committee serves as a conservative check on the document that Governor Evers introduced earlier this year. We’re bonding over $500 million less, taxing over $1 billion less, and nearly doubling the size of our rainy day fund.
“On top of that, our budget cuts taxes by over $500 million. It invests $30 million in veterans programs. It takes care of our seniors by making significant investments in nursing homes that the governor failed to make. It pushes back against attacks on Right to Work and School Choice. It holds the line on drug-testing for welfare recipients and stops a Medicaid expansion.
“Many members of the Senate fought hard against a gas tax increase and won. Republicans are meeting our infrastructure needs throughout the state and at the same time passing legislation that will hold the Department of Transportation accountable for the taxpayer money they receive.
“I’m disappointed that Senator Nass couldn’t find a way to vote for the budget. He’s a good legislator who was very involved in the process at every step. This budget is a strong counterpunch to the budget that Governor Evers introduced in February.”
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) represents the 13th Senate District, which covers portions of Dodge, Jefferson, Waukesha, Washington, Dane, and Columbia counties.
