Tim Hanna has been named the Executive Director of the Local Government Institute of Wisconsin (LGI). His focus will be on building trust to affect change.

“The foundation of the Local Government Institute of Wisconsin is collaboration and partnerships. We want to build on that foundation; strengthen the partnerships and increase the trust, not just among local governments, but between all local governments and the state,” said Hanna. “We know the current relationship is not sustainable.”

Hanna is currently the Mayor of Appleton, having served in that position for 24 years. He announced recently that he was not seeking reelection in 2020.

“Mayor Hanna is a passionate voice for serving the entire community, which he has never defined according to municipal boundaries. He’s a natural consensus-builder,” said Jerry Deschane, Executive Director, League of Wisconsin Municipalities.

“This is an opportunity for local governments to chart a course for the future together,” said Mark O’Connell, Executive Director, Wisconsin Counties Association.

“Wisconsin’s local governments look forward to shaping the future of the state with the help of the Local Government Institute,” Mike Koles, Executive Director, Wisconsin Towns Association stated. “Everyone will have a seat at the table as we work towards an even better Wisconsin.”

The LGI was created in 2007 by Wisconsin’s local government associations including the Wisconsin Counties Association, League of Wisconsin Municipalities, the former Wisconsin Alliance of Cities and the Wisconsin Towns Association. Its purpose is to enhance collaboration, conduct research and educate the public and policymakers on ways to improve local government services to Wisconsin’s citizens. The LGI has focused most recently on the future of local government collaboration, engagement and accountability by facilitating community conversations and projects in the Chippewa Valley, Sauk and Portage Counties.

Hanna will start in his new role in April 2020.
