The following is a statement from Democratic Party of Wisconsin chair Ben Wikler on the Supreme Court’s ruling to uphold extreme partisan gerrymandering:
“Today’s unconscionable decision by a partisan 5-4 majority of the Supreme Court shows just how far the GOP is willing to bend the Constitution in order to lock in power at the expense of democracy. Today’s decision will join Citizens United in the hall of fame of anti-democracy Supreme Court decisions.”
“In 2011, Republicans in Wisconsin set out to draw maps that diluted the power of Democratic voters to ensure indefinite Republican control. The result has been an unfair electoral system that flies in the face of the foundational values of our representative democracy.
“It is more important than ever that we elect Democrats to our state legislature. Regardless of today’s ruling, Democrats in Wisconsin will continue to compete everywhere possible in 2020 and beyond. We will continue to mobilize, and we will continue to build the infrastructure necessary for more victories for the people of Wisconsin.
“The fight for fair maps did not end today. We will continue to advocate for the values of our democracy where every vote is counted equally and every voice is heard. The future of our state depends on it.”
