Department of Revenue Secretary Peter Barca announced today that he has appointed Maria Guerra Lapacek to serve as Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Department of Revenue, effective April 29, 2019.
“Maria has the perfect background for her new position with our department, with extensive communications, business affairs, legal and legislative experience. She held important roles that will translate into great value for us. We look forward to having her on board. Maria will be a great asset to the Department of Revenue.”
Since 2004, Guerra Lapacek held numerous high-level leadership positions in her career. Most recently, she was the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Legislative Counsel and Government Affairs in the City of Chicago. She also served as Commissioner of the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, Deputy Director of the Office of the Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Budget Director of the Office of Budget and Management.
Prior to that, she worked in communications and media serving as a press secretary for California Congressman Sam Farr and as a news producer for Telemundo, PBS, and WTTW Channel 11. She was also a law clerk in the private sector for Kraft Foods.
Guerra Lapacek has a bachelor’s degree in Communication from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Additionally, she holds a master’s degree in Business Administration and a law degree, both from DePaul University in Chicago.
