We believe that sexual violence is a political problem that demands a political response.

We are asking today that every candidate running for elected office in Wisconsin offer public support for the Child Victims Act.

The basic and fundamental protections of the law must guarantee justice to society’s most vulnerable members: victims of child sex abuse. Child sex abuse is among the most underreported crimes in the United States.

The effects of sexual violence have no time limit. Neither should the statutes on child sex crimes. It often takes years for an individual suffering from the life-altering trauma of sexual violence to come forward to seek justice. The law needs to be there when they do.

The Child Victims Act is the most comprehensive and effective legislation to enact these reforms. This legislation would:

  • eliminate the civil statute of limitations on child sex abuse

  • allow a three-year window in which victims barred by the current statutes could file civil suits.

Wisconsin currently has some of the nation’s most prohibitive statutes for child sex abuse victims. Too often, when it comes to sexual violence, the law protects the wrong person. Child predators and any institution who knowingly harbors them need to be held accountable.

With the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, sexual violence has become a central and ongoing part of our public conversation. Citizens across the country and in Wisconsin are demanding from our leaders a serious political commitment to end sexual violence. Supporting the Child Victims Act would be just that.

Spokespersons for victims and their allies will be outside the Milwaukee Press Club Luncheon at the UWM Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health (1240 N 10th St.) Tuesday, May 22nd at 10:30am to answer questions related to the Child Victims Act and recent responses from the Matt Flynn campaign.
