MADISON – Yesterday, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) threatened to limit Governor-elect Tony Evers’ power less than 24-hours after Evers was elected.  In response, Representatives Chris Taylor (D-Madison) and Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) issued the following statements:

“Republicans change the rules when they win and when they lose for their own political purposes, not to benefit the people of this state,” said Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison). “From gerrymandering, to rewriting campaign finance laws to benefit their donors, to tinkering with the open records law, Republicans have shown they’re willing to do whatever it takes to amass and protect their power. By ousting Governor Walker, Wisconsinites spoke loud and clear that they want real leaders to step up and solve the state’s problems, not the same shenanigans we’ve seen for the last eight years under Republican rule.”

“Republican leaders need to stop acting like children,” commented Rep. Melissa Sargent (D-Madison). “The voters have spoken, and they want adults who can come to the table and compromise. Unfortunately, if Speaker Vos’ comments are any indication, we’re going to see more of the same out of Republicans in the future unless new leaders step forward to lead the Republican caucus in a desperately needed new direction. The real kicker is that Wisconsinites made it very clear on Tuesday – they are ready for change. I sure hope that Speaker Vos recognizes that this brand of partisan antics will no longer be tolerated by Wisconsinites.”
