Wisconsin needs a champion for students and public schools, teachers say

The Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) recommends Dr. Tony Evers for governor.

“Tony Evers believes all children should have the same opportunity for success, no matter where they live or what their family circumstances,” said Ron Martin, an Eau Claire eighth grade teacher and WEAC president. “It’s time for Wisconsin to restore democracy, and that starts with electing a governor who has a plan to invest in public schools, repair our roads and make things better for working people.”

“Public schools are important to our communities,” Martin said. “The incumbent governor has gone to great lengths to dismantle neighborhood schools, while at the same time Tony Evers has worked tirelessly to support them. This fall, educators are going back to school and back to the ballot box with enthusiasm and dedication rooted in what’s best for our students.”

In accepting WEAC’s recommendation, Evers said, “As a former educator, principal, district administrator and now as the State Superintendent of Schools, I’m proud to receive WEAC’s endorsement. I know the last eight years have been difficult for our educators, and I will restore respect for teachers and classroom learning. I’ve spent my career fighting for kids in Wisconsin, and I know what’s best for our kids is best for our state. Whether it’s all-day pre-K, increasing funding for special education, or addressing student loan debt, every kid in Wisconsin, regardless of zip code, should have the opportunity to receive a world-class education, and that will be my top priority as governor.”

When making recommendations for the state Legislature, WEAC members focus on areas including support for public schools, giving employees a voice in school decisions and professional respect for the role educators have in keeping our communities strong.
