Madison West DMV Service Center’s new location opens January 22, 2018

Current locations at Hill Farms and Odana Road to close

The Madison West DMV Service Center is moving to 8417 Excelsior Drive off the West Beltline and will be open for business at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, January 22.  The new, larger location is easy to find, offers customers free and close by parking, and is large enough to accommodate the customers who currently use the DMV offices at Odana Road and Sheboygan Avenue.

The current site at Hill Farms (Sheboygan Avenue) will close at 4:45 p.m. on Friday, January 19 and will be demolished as part of the larger area development.

The larger size of the new office allows savings to taxpayers by closing the Odana Road office.  The last day for Madison’s DMV Odana Renewal Center, at 6514 Odana Rd, is January 18. They will be open for service until 6 p.m. that day.

The new Madison West DMV location is just off the Beltline and provides an opportunity to better serve the Greater Madison Area and growing areas of Dane County and beyond.   The new DMV Service Center is the closest five-day location for customers living in parts of Columbia, Green, Grant, Iowa, Lafayette, Richland and Sauk Counties – though there are a number of offices in these counties that offer 20 hours of service per week.

Customers of the new Excelsior Drive location will be served by two bus routes, Madison Metro’s route 15 and route 73. Customers have multiple bus options to access either Madison West or Madison East DMV offices.  The East Madison office is served directly via route 6 and is close to Madison College/MATC’s main campus.

No Need To Get In Line: Options Beyond Buildings

The Wisconsin DMV has multiple options for customers to obtain services without needing to visit a DMV office.  Nearly every vehicle transaction can be done online. There are also many services provided by third-party vendors (such as kiosks at grocery stores) and/or via traditional mail.

Ordering replacement driver license or ID cards and changing one’s address can also be done online.  The typical DMV customers need only visit a DMV office once every eight years to renew their driver license or ID, and many senior citizen customers can obtain non-expiring IDs if they choose and never need to return to a DMV office.

The online DMV locator tool helps customers find their closest DMV. It shows the DMV locations on a map, the address, hours and services offered, estimated miles from the customer’s location along with directions and, at larger offices, provides current wait times.

DMV has implemented additional customer service features, including scheduling an appointment, online chat to talk with service representatives and the online Driver License Guide (  The Driver License Guide provides a means to confirm eligibility, electronically complete and submit forms, and create a customized checklist of what documentation should be brought to visit a DMV to reduce the need to return with forgotten paperwork.
