(WAUKESHA, WI) – Waukesha County residents are reminded to prepare for the first expected accumulating snowfall of the season, and to know what non-emergency services are available to them.
“The first snowfall of the year can be one of the most dangerous,” said Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow. “If residents haven’t prepared their vehicles or need to get re-acclimated to winter driving, they’re more likely to end up in a situation where they need help. We want to remind them to be prepared, and to avoid calling 911 for issues that aren’t emergencies.”
Be Prepared
Residents are reminded to give themselves additional time for their Friday morning commutes. They should prepare and pack emergency safety kits in vehicles that include items like a flashlight, blanket, hat, gloves, cell phone chargers, water, jumper cables, ice scrapers, shovel, and grit.
Know Who to Call for Non-Emergency Issues
Residents should call 911 only if experiencing an emergency situation that poses an immediate risk to health, life, property, or environment. For non-emergency requests, calls must be directed to local Police or Fire; to be connected with community assistance needs, call 211.
Plows Ready for Snow
The Waukesha County Department of Public Works is pretreating County roads against icy conditions. 53 trucks equipped with salt and plows are on standby once snow begins to accumulate.
When encountering a plow on the road, residents should stay back 200 feet, and avoid the plows’ blind spots on each side and behind the vehicle. Care should be taken when attempting to pass a snowplow because of limited visibility around the snow cloud. Many snowplow wing blades are hit each season by vehicles attempting to pass them.
Waukesha County plow drivers clear County and state roadways only. Residents should check with their municipalities for plowing and parking information related to their city, town and village streets.
