Freedom. Endowed by our Creator. Defined by our Constitution. Defended each and every day by the men and women who proudly wear the uniform of these United States of America.

Thank you to all who have worn the uniform and to those still wearing it today. Most important, as we gather around the state and across the nation, we pause to remember those who paid the ultimate price for the freedoms we cherish today. The names of the fallen will forever be a part of our history.

Wisconsin became the 30th state in the union on May 29, 1848. The Civil War broke out a few years later and Wisconsin sent more than 91,000 soldiers to fight on the side of the north. Some 12,000 never returned home as they died during the war.

Over the years, many brave men and women from Wisconsin have served and died for our country – in World War I and World War II, in Korea and Vietnam, and in places like Iraq and Afghanistan in more recent times.

On Memorial Day, we honor all of our fallen heroes and we say a prayer for their families and loved ones. God bless their souls. God bless those still serving today. And may God continue to bless the United States of America.

Sincerely,

Scott Walker
