State Representative Don Vruwink turned in 350 signatures from constituents for his re-election campaign on Thursday. That is 150 more than required by law.
“In two weeks I personally gathered the first 300 signatures, and I thank all of my constituents who signed,” Vruwink said. “I have deep and long-lasting ties to each of the communities I represent. I am a UW-Whitewater graduate; a member of the Greater Whitewater Committee and the Milton Chamber of Commerce; and a sponsor of the Albion Tigers baseball team. I am a substitute teacher in Oregon schools and I umpire high school baseball and softball games on an as-needed basis. I spent last summer and fall visiting homes in rural townships I represent. I have informal advisory boards everywhere I go – be it gas stations, cafés, or schools.
“During my first term in office, I had the honor of nominating two of my constituents as Hometown Heroes. Town of Milton Police Officer Lindsey Bittorf and Westminster Kennel Club Champion Kent Boyles of Edgerton were officially recognized by the State Assembly. These two are just a few examples of the tremendous talent and compassion we have in the 43rd Assembly District.
“I currently serve on the Milton School Board and previously served as the president of the Milton City Council and Milton Recreation Director. I taught high school social studies for 42 years and coached many different sports.
“Among my priorities for the next legislative session are building support for the bills I introduced last session and other initiatives: Expanding broadband so everyone in Wisconsin has access to high-speed internet; ensuring we take care of our military veterans; creating a stable source of funding to fix and maintain roads; freezing property taxes for low-income seniors; reforming the way we do re-districting so that voters choose their legislators; legislators do not choose their voters.
“I am proud of the service I have given to my constituents who contact me with problems. These contacts have resulted in changes for the good, such as creating new agri-tourism signs. I always welcome the opportunity to assist my constituents.”
